If you are just learning how to use a sewing machine I would highly recommend sewing on paper first. You can remove the thread from your sewing machine and use paper as you would cloth. Sewing on paper will help you navigate the foot as well as help you gain speed control. Draw lines on your paper to follow and see how closely you can follow along the lines.
